Report by Daniel Mortlock:
Today's Remnants game was like a mash-up of the season's previous matches - but with the significant shortcoming that it primarily drew from the worst of what had come before. All of which brings to mind a famously short review of Aphex Twin's 26 Remixes For Cash: "You can't polish a turd."
Actually, that's a bit harsh, as we started very well: Cam Petrie (43* off 32 balls) raced to a stylish retirement and, with good support from Andy Bell (25 off 23 balls), took us to 75/0 in the 8th (eight-ball) over. Given the short format (12x8s) we needed an acceleration but instead got the opposite. Of the middle order only Phil Hastings (11 off 15 balls) made it into double figures, as Coton's young bowler by the name of Sandercock swung his way to deserved figures of 4/17.
Our total of 114 might have been sub-par, but all was not lost as we a pusedo-secret weapon in the form of Mike Foulkes, who'd taken 6/21 for Bassingbourn on the weekend. Mike was duly handed the non-new ball . . . and began with the loosest of looseners, a slow thigh-high full toss that was lazily pulled for six. And somehow from there the result seemed to be foregone conclusion as Coton raced along at more than 10 an over. Joe White (0/15) and Paul Jordan (0/13) put the breaks on a little, and Joe also completed a tricky catch off Daniel Mortlock (2/18) when he decisively called off Vishal Bole while keeping his eye on the ball . . . but the winning boundary was hit with 21 balls to spare.
