Report by Daniel Mortlock:
This had the possibility of being one of the must-play fixtures of the season, a chance for us casual cricketers to take on the University second eleven, typically made up of players who've gone through years of proper coaching at school and some of whom will probably end up playing a few First Class games. It was hence a little disappointing that we had a few drop-outs, but, after spending considerable time chasing up potential players, we had ten men ready to represent Remnants CC.
What we didn't have was good weather: last night's match was called off when there was a deluge right on 6pm, meaning 22 wasted trips (well 21, strictly, since one of our lot failed to edit the Doodle poll correctly and so didn't turn up), and Dave had to be very careful with his ground management to ensure that the square was dry enough for play today. Rain was forecast, but it didn't materialise, and was even sunny when the traditional 3pm "is it on?" call was made . . .
. . . except this call had a different purpose, which was not to find out from Dave what conditions were like, but to inform him that the Crusaders had pulled out, unable to field a team because "too many of our players are injured/at May Balls etc and with the impending weather have pulled out." So there's at least some compensation in that they'll presumably all catch pneumonia at their precious balls . . .
