Remnants vs. The Philanderers

18:00, Wednesday, August 1, 2012
Fitzwilliam College

Remnants (104/7 in 20 6-ball overs)
lost to
The Philanderers (105/2 in 16.4 6-ball overs)
by 8 wickets.

No Remnant saw fit to comment on this match but, perhaps unsurprisingly given the result, one of the Philanderers, John Russell did, posting the following report on his club's very stylish web-site:

The Philanderers continued their rich vein of form (two consecutive wins) with a comprehensive victory over Remnants at Fitzwilliam College. Having narrowly lost the early season fixture by the smallest of margins (agonisingly off the penultimate ball) Philanderers were keen to exact revenge against their old rivals.

On a day when Team GB finally won the first of their gold medals, Philanderers produced a performance of Olympic proportions. Under the "virgin" captaincy of Hugo White (the President will expand on this terminology if required) Philanderers fielded their usual quota of maturing players together with a welcome sprinkling of genuine youth (as opposed to those misguidedly believing in eternal youth).

Remnants batting first made a paltry 104 all out and this achieved only by some late order resistance. Philanderers bowling, led by Jamie Rutt (3/27) and ably supported by the collective youth, was always among the wickets. Add to this some sprightly fielding by the elders (Heggars et al.), this was indeed an efficient display in the field.

As to the batting, the chase was never in doubt with Ed Pearson, showing undoubted pedigree, scoring a stylish 62 not out. Michael Frape and Jon Bailey batted ably (although somewhat less stylishly) in support. The target was reached with only 2 wickets down and 3 overs to spare.

In all a job well done and justifiably finished off with a convivial beer.
