In theory this would have been Remnants's 800th game - but "in theory" was all the match ever was. We'd been waiting patiently for several months for The Woozlers to announce a venue for the game, but a day or two beforehand the best they'd come up with was "an amber light" for the use of the village ground in distant Waresely, some 14 miles west of Cambridge. At this point Dave Williams stepped in and booked Parker's Piece, which would have been a fine venue for the historic game, but for the fact that the booking was so late that the pitch wouldn't be cut and the lines wouldn't be marked. Still, we solidiered on, and eventually everyone was all set to converge on the Piece for a 5:30pm start . . . only for rain to converge on the whole of southern England a few hours earlier.
