Remnants, for once, had a full eleven at the ground by 6pm . . . the only problem was that there wasn't a single Education Nomad in evidence. With Geoff away we didn't even have a contact number for the Nomads, so there was nothing for it but to stage an impromptu double-wicket competition. The five pairs would get four overs batting against one bowler from each of the other pairs, with Alex Brown double duty in partnering Ev Fox after he did 'keeping duties for the first five innings. It was essentially normal cricket rules, except there were no umpires (and hence no LBWs) and wickets resulted in the loss of six runs rather than dismissal.
The scores were surprisingly low, with Phil Watson and Rupert Brown winning with the not obviously impressive total of 27. Indeed, the two teams that followed (Paul Jordan and Andy Owen and then Ev and Alex) were both ahead of this total towards the end of their innings but lost wickets at inopportune moments.
Paul Jordan top-scored with 19, putting some of the more fancied batsmen to shame; he also took enough wickets to finish up conceding negative runs, although was pipped by Daniel Mortlock (3/9 = -9) for the bowling honours. There was no obvious best fieldsman (although Ev completed seven or eight stumpings) but, apparently by some sort of conservation of smugness, Paul and Daniel managed two of the worst fielding efforts in Remnants history. The final contribution was by Sal, who kindly agreed to score through our frivolous activities, once again providing an immaculate record of the goings on, reproduced below.
