Report by Daniel Mortlock:
Yet another cold, grey day seemed pretty likely to result in yet another wash out, but the rain stayed away and Remnants' silver jubilee season finally got underway.
We took to the field first, George Speller (0/20), Mike Jones (1/13 to be top of the bowling averages, at least for the moment) and Julius Rix (0/19 on debut for Remnants) keeping The Globe's batsmen to just 38/1 at the half-way point. We were unfortunate to not to have taken more wickets, though, the batsmen having survived a few streaky shots and half-chances, but when Nick Clarke scored a direct hit run out it seemed our luck might be about to change.
And indeed it did. Whilst Mick Taylor (a century against us late last season) was soon heading back to the pavilion, a bloke by the name of Dean batted with Mick-esque brutality to make 75* and help The Globe score 82 off the last 48 balls of their innings. Russell Woolf (0/23) was unlucky to go wicketless, having catches go down off consecutive deliveries, but Daniel Mortlock (1/35) led by counter-example as we saw the balance of the match shift decisively in The Globe's favour.
Scoring at more than a run per ball in the damp, heavy conditions seemed pretty unlikely, but our "run chase" barely even deserved that title. It was only in the last two overs that we even got to half the required rate. Robin Woolley (11) made the best of the early going, and Tony Malik grafted his way to 35 (despite being dropped an amazing five times), but these are about as close to highlights as it got.
During the post-match drinks Ev made one of Dave Norman's daughters cry (admittedly by the understandable action of taking a cigarette butt from her), but this was all forgotten when Geoff suspiciously went off with The Globe's top scorer - perhaps a transfer is in the offing?
